DEREK JARMAN - Director

Derek Jarman was born in Northwood, Middlesex in 1942 and studied at King’s Col-
lege London and the Slade School of Art. He held his first one man show in 1969 at
the Lisson Gallery and designed sets and costumes for the theatre and opera.
He also worked as a production manager fro Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’ and ‘Savage
Messiah’ at the same time producing his own films in super 8.

With influences ranging from Powell and Pressburger to Jean Cocteau and Kenneth Anger, Jar-
man advocated a personal cinema dedicated to striking imagery and evocative sound rather than
the imperatives of narrative and characterisation.
In addition to his acclaimed features, he also made many notable music videos for such artists as
The Smiths and Pet Shop Boys.

A long-time gay activist, Jarman was diagnosed HIV positive in 1986 and later moved to Prospect
Cottage in Dungeness, Kent. In the shadow of the nuclear power station there, Jarman wrote
journals and created a famed and extraordinary garden. He died in 1994.
