EMIR KUSTURICA - Director & Screenwriter


Emir Kusturica is one of the most creative and successful European filmmakers in
activity. Since his debut movie, 'Do You remember Dolly Bell?' won the Golden Lion
for best first film at Venice in 1981, Kusturica has maintained a track record of
award-winning at major festivals. 'When Father Was Away on Business' took the
Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1985. 'The Time of the Gypsies' won the Best Director
award at the same festival in 1988. At Berlin, in 1993, with 'Arizona Dream', Kus-
turica added a Silver Bear to his collection, before winning his second Palme d’Or
at Cannes with 'Underground' in 1995. Kusturica then took BLACK CAT, WHITE CAT to Venice in 1998 and came away with a Silver Lion.


When he turned his hand to documentary filmmaking in 2001, Kusturica won the Silver Plaque for Best Documentary at the Chicago International Film Festival with his 'Super 8 Stories', which re-
counted the adventures on tour of the No Smoking Orchestra, the gypsy techno-rock band with
whom Kusturica the guitar-player has performed regularly since 1986.
