SERGEI BONDARCHUK - Director


Born 09.25.1920 in the village of Byelozyorka, Kherson Region. In 1937-1938, an actor at the
Eisk Drama Theatre. In 1938-1942 attended the Rostov Theatre School. From 1942 to 1946,
served in the army. Graduated from the Acting Department at the VGIK (1948, master class of
S. Gerasimov). His diploma work was the role of Valko in the film 'The Young Guard'. From
1971, led an acting master class at the VGIK, professor (from 1974). People’s Artist of the
USSR (1952), winner of the Lenin Prize (1960), winner of the State Prizes of the USSR and the
RSFSR (1952, 1977, 1984), Hero of Socialist Labour (1980), Honored Figure of Culture of
Cz.S.S.R. The Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film, 1968.
Prize winner for Best Actor at the 1979 National Film Festival.
Winner of the Festival’s Organizing Committee Prize at the 1983 National Film Festival.

Died 10.20.1994 in Moscow
