BÉLA TARR - Director & Screenwriter


Béla Tarr was born in Pécs, Hungary in 1955. He graduated from the Hungarian
Academy of Theatre and Film in Budapest in 1981. Since 1981, he has been em-
ployed by MAFILM. In 1979-80, he was a member of the direction committee of the
Béla Balázs Studio in Budapest, a film studio for young filmmakers. In 1989-90, he
was in Berlin on a DAAD grant and since 1990 he has been working as a visiting
professor at the Film Academy in Berlin. He has been a member of the European
Film Academy since 1996 and is one of the world’s most original and acclaimed


contemporary filmmakers. In a body of work concerned with explorations of the human con-
dition, he has created an uncompromising, innovative and utterly engrossing cinematic world.
