LEOS CARAX COLLECTION

Since he burst onto the scene with BOY
MEETS GIRL in 1983, Leos Carax has
emerged as one of French cinema’s most
talented, creative and controversial film-
makers.

This 3 disc set brings together three of his finest features.

BOY MEETS GIRL (1983)
- Carax’s debut, shot in black and white to magnificent effect, blends dark humour with a gentle love story. Frequent Carax collaborator Denis Lavant plays Alex, who wanders the streets at night after his girl has jilted him in favour of his best friend. Elsewhere, Mireille is having prob-
lems with her boyfriend; their paths are destined to cross... French with English subtitles, 100 minutes

THE NIGHT IS YOUNG ('Mauvais Sang', 1986)
- Fulfilling his early promise as one of the most gifted filmmakers of his generation, Carax’s inventive second film brilliantly meshes a tale of young love with elements of science fiction thriller. Denis Lavant plays Alex, a young punk who becomes involved with a veteran criminal gang plotting to steal a serum that cures a disease that is killing lovers. But when Alex falls for Anna (Juliette Binoche), the mistress of the group’s leader (Michel Piccoli), matters begin to get complicated. Darkly humorous, visually stunning and uniquely stylish, ‘The Night is Young’ pays imaginative homage to Carax’s influences and is one of the most remarkable French films of the early ‘80s. French with English subtitles, 22 minutes

POLA X (1999)
- Haunting, passionate, powerful, and featuring a score by rock legend Scott Walker, POLA X
is Carax’s dazzling adaptation of Herman Melville’s novel ‘Pierre, or the Ambiguities’. Guillaume
Depardieu plays Pierre, a young man who is devastated by the revelation that he has an illegit-
imate sister, whose existence has been kept secret from him by his mother (Catherine De-
neuve). With his life shattered by lies and deception, he sets off to uncover the truth of the world - a destructive quest that threatens to consume him and those he loves.
