Born in 1924 in Georgia, Sergei Paradjanov is recognized today as one of the 20th century's greatest masters of cinema.
Although acclaimed internationally, Paradjanov’s visionary and poetic oeuvre was regarded as subversive by the Soviet authorities and he was frequently banned from filmmaking and imprisoned.
