FANNY AND ALEXANDER

The Ekdahls are a large well-to-do
theatrical family living in a Swedish
provincial town in 1907.
Following the annual Christmas Eve
nativity play at the family's theatre, 8
year old Fanny, her 10 year old brother
Alexander, and an assortment of
relatives and servants gather together
for a traditional family celebration.

The children's lives are set for a dramatic change when their actor father, Oscar, collapeses during a performance of Hamlet and dies.

The puritanical local Bishop charms his widow, Emilie, and invites her and the children to leave behind their comfortable home for a new life in the Bishop's Palace.
Helena Ekdahl becomes increasingly concerned about her former daughter-in-law and grandchildren, now living under the Bishop's strict regime. The children are mistreated
and Emilie, though disillusioned with her new life, is powerless to act.
Isak Jacobi, an old family friend, comes to the children's rescue and they spend time
in his magical emporium, while their mother attempts to secure her own freedom.

FANNY AND ALEXANDER ends, as it began, with a family reunion and an optimistic view of the future.
