Chukhrai's trip to Hollywood in 1998, as director of Russia's foreign-language Academy Award nominee, marked a return to film for the director (whose credits include 1983's 'The Cage for Canary Birds' and 1980's 'People of the Ocean'), after a brief spell in TV commercials and documentaries which earned him a slew of international awards.
