Lou Ye attended the famous Beijing Academy during the time of the student protests and the Tiananmen Square Massacre. At the Academy, the influence of Soviet films was waning and Lou Ye and his contemporaries, known as China's 6th Generation Filmmakers, were more directly influenced by European and American cinema.
'Suzhou river', is his first independently produced feature.
