PATHER PANCHALI

'Pather Panchali' is the extraordinarily accomplished debut feature of Satyajit Ray, India's greatest film director and a member of the pantheon of the world's finest filmmakers.

The first instalment in the 'Apu' trilogy (followed by 'Aparajito' and 'The World of Apu') the film is adapted from Bibhutibhushan Banerjee's 1929 novel and tells the story of Apu, a young boy born into a poor but loving family living in a rural Bengali village.

When his father leaves for the city to pursue his dream of becoming a playwright, Apu's mother is left to struggle to take care of him, his sister and his elderly aunt.

Enormously touching in its simplicity, emotional sweep and visual beauty, 'Pather Panchali' was the first Indian film to achieve widespread international acclaim and established Ray as a master filmmaker.
