Following the events of 'Pather Panchali' and 'Aparajito', the now adult Apu (Soumitra Chatterjee) is trying to make a living as a writer in Calcutta.
Through an unexpected set of circumstances, Apu stumbles into marriage with the beautiful young Aparna (Sarmila Tagore), with whom he soon falls deeply in love.
But Apu's idyllic happiness is shattered by tragedy and, consumed by grief, he takes flight from the city and his responsibilities.
